草衣 so-i

About so-i

We are a small indigo dyeing studio located by the sea in Yamaguchi, Japan.

Our craft relies on the power of fermentation and living bacteria—deeply influenced by the natural environment.

Each shade we produce is born from the living microorganisms that reside in our indigo vats.
It is our mission to share the rich, vivid, and deep blue of true natural indigo with the world.

Craftsmanship

To create with time.
To create with care.

At so-i, we dye using sukumo indigo prepared through traditional lye fermentation.
We hope you can feel our hands and hearts in every step of the process.

Aizome

The indigo at so-i is created using "Aizome", a traditional Japanese dyeing method known as "Awa-style natural lye fermentation".

This centuries-old technique uses no chemicals—only natural ingredients: fermented indigo leaves (sukumo), wood ash lye, oyster shell lime, and wheat bran.

Through careful fermentation, we prepare a natural indigo vat entirely by hand.

Service

We offer custom indigo dyeing services using the traditional lye fermentation method.

We carefully hand-dye each item—whether it's clothing, fabric, or thread entrusted to us—according to your desired depth of color.

Each piece is dyed one by one using natural fermentation, allowing the true beauty and texture of indigo to emerge.
We hope you enjoy the clarity and character of this deep, natural blue.
